Light a candle and place it behind a large bottle. Then blow hard at the bottle and the candle will go out. The secret is that the air currents pass around the sides of the bottle, thereby reaching the candle.

HOW TO ADD FIVE MATCHES TO SIX AND MAKE NINE.

Take eleven matches and place six in a row about two inches apart. Then tell the audience that you will add five matches to the six and make nine. The secret is in spelling the word N-I-N-E, as shown in the drawing, by forming the letters with the matches.

Magician Tells How to Change Pack of Cards from Black to Red

CHANGING A PACK OF CARDS FROM BLACK TO RED.

Separate the black cards of a pack from the red, and put them together again with the colors in alternate positions, black followed by red, the black cards extending about one-eighth inch above the red, and place the joker on top. Hold the deck firmly in this position, and tell the audience that you will first make all the cards black and then, with the excep­tion of the joker, change them to red. Flip the cards for­ward, and they appear black, do the same backward and they are red. Then stand the deck on a table, and tap the cards so that the deck is flush. Flip the cards again and they are both black and red.

THE MATCH BOX THAT CAN’T BE SMASHED.

Press two opposite corners of the cover of an ordinary penny match box so that it is slightly thrown out of square. Bring the box before your audience, stand the cover on its side, place the drawer upright on top of the cover, as shown in the drawing, and ask someone to try to crush it with a blow of the hand. It will be found that the two parts of the box fly in separate directions when the hand comes in contact with them.

HOW TO SWALLOW A KNIFE.

Take an ordinary table knife, or a ruler, and stand in front of the audience. Open the mouth wide, and place right hand over lower portion, as though to keep the mouth open. Then with the left hand shove the knife down the right sleeve, and immediately withdraw it. With the mouth partly hidden by the right hand, it appears to the onlooker that the knife is actually being swallowed.

THE RING AND CORD TRICK.

The performer uses two portiere rings, large enough foe the hand to squeeze through, and a piece of cord for this trick. One ring is secretly slipped over the hand and the wrist of one arm, where it is hidden by the sleeve. Appearing before the audience, the performer asks someone to tie securely each end of the cord to his wrists and seal it with wax if desired, and, passing the second ring around for inspection, he an­nounces that, without untying the cord, he will hang the ring on the cord. With his back turned, he slips the exposed ring in a pocket, and pulls the, hidden one over his hand and onto, the cord. The audience is then allowed to again inspect the ring and cord to ascertain that they have not been tampered with.

HOW TO RAISE THREE MATCHES WITH ONE.

1. Sharpen the end of one match, put a slit in the end of another, and place the sharpened end in the slit so that the two matches are held together.
   
   
2. Balance a third match against the first two, forming a pyramid or tent-shaped arrangement.
   
   
3. Insert the fourth match under the apex of the three, and tilt the two fastened together slightly forward so that the third match falls forward beneath the first two. The three matches are then pressing against the fourth or lifting match and it will be found easy to raise them.
   

How to Make a Dime Disappear

HOW TO MAKE A DIME VANISH.

Hold a dime in your right hand, and a person's hand with your left. Tell the person that you will place a dime in the palm of his hand three times, and the last time it will dis­appear. Instruct him that each time the dime touches his palm, the hand must be immediately closed. Swing your arm quickly three times from the top of your head to his hand each time pressing the coin into the palm, and withdrawing it. Before you lower your arm the third time, leave the dime on top of your head, and press your thumb nail into the palm instead. Then tell the person that the coin, which he believes is still held in his hand, has disappeared. Examination will reveal that this is true, the secret being that pressing the coin into the palm creates a feeling in the hand that the coin is there.

How You Can Smoke a Pipe Without Lighting It

Liquid Ammonia and Spirits of Salts Used in Trick to Produce Smoke.

HOW TO SMOKE A PIPE WITHOUT LIGHTING IT.

Two pipes, a little spirit of salts and liquid ammonia are needed for this trick. Secretly smear the inside of the bowl of one pipe with the spirit of salts and the bowl of the other with the ammonia, and appear before your audience announcing that you will produce smoke from the empty bowls of the pipes without the use of a match. Place the bowl of one pipe on top of the other, and the spirit of salts coming in contact with the ammonia will form a smoke much like that produced from tobacco.
